Cathay Pacific’s Innovative Approach to Inflight Safety and City Promotion

Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong’s flagship carrier, has introduced a groundbreaking inflight safety video that doubles as a vibrant tour of the city. This initiative is not just about safety; it’s a strategic embrace of the airline’s deep roots in Hong Kong, designed to enchant passengers with the city’s dynamic allure while ensuring their safety. The video is a creative journey through safety protocols, set against the backdrop of Hong Kong’s most picturesque locations.

The video, which starts rolling out on flights from August 1, 2024, replaces the previous version first introduced in 2016. This new safety video is a result of a collaborative effort with the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), aiming to not only deliver critical safety information but to also promote tourism in Hong Kong. This dual-purpose content aligns with Cathay Pacific’s strategy to enhance customer experience and promote local tourism simultaneously.

Scenes in the video are meticulously chosen to represent both traditional and modern aspects of Hong Kong. For instance, the no smoking announcement is cleverly set at a bustling dai pai dong, a traditional open-air food stall that offers an authentic taste of local cuisine, symbolizing Hong Kong’s culinary heritage. Similarly, the demonstration of the life jackets is set against the thrilling backdrop of a dragon boat race, a cultural spectacle that attracts viewers globally.

Other featured locations include the tranquil Shek O Beach, where emergency procedures are demonstrated, and the bustling shopping district of Causeway Bay. Cultural highlights like the Xiqu Centre in the West Kowloon Cultural District and the historic Tin Hau Temple in Yau Ma Tei are also showcased, further promoting the city’s rich cultural tapestry. The video concludes with serene visuals from Clearwater Bay Country Park, illustrating the diverse natural landscapes available in Hong Kong.

To celebrate the launch, a prestigious event was held at The Sky Lounge, The Upper House on July 26, 2024. Distinguished guests including Lavinia Lau, Cathay’s Chief Customer and Commercial Officer, and notable figures from HKTB attended the event. Lau emphasized that safety remains a cornerstone of Cathay Pacific’s operations, and this innovative video is a testament to their commitment to safety and excellence in customer service.

Dane Cheng, Executive Director of HKTB, highlighted the long-standing partnership between HKTB and Cathay Pacific in promoting Hong Kong globally. He expressed enthusiasm about the video’s potential to inspire visitors to explore Hong Kong’s diverse attractions.
