Introduction of Direct Flights from Manila to Chiang Mai

Cebu Pacific, a leader in low-cost air travel in the Philippines, has announced the launch of a new direct flight service. Starting on October 29, 2024, the airline will operate flights from Manila International Airport (MNL) to Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX). This route is the first direct connection from Manila to the northern region of Thailand, offering travelers a unique opportunity to explore the cultural and natural beauty of Chiang Mai.

The introduction of the Manila-Chiang Mai route expands Cebu Pacific’s footprint in Thailand, complementing existing services to Bangkok from Manila and Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Passengers have the choice of flying into either Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) or Don Mueang International Airport (DMK).

To celebrate the launch, Cebu Pacific has initiated a promotional fare starting at just PHP 1.00 ($0.017), exclusive of fees and surcharges. This promotion is available for flights from October 29, 2024, to March 30, 2025, and must be booked by August 6, 2024.

Strategic Business Movements and Fleet Expansion

In a significant development on July 2, 2024, Cebu Pacific signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for the acquisition of up to 152 aircraft, valued at approximately PHP 1.4 trillion ($24 billion). This agreement, marking the largest aircraft order in Philippine aviation history, includes a firm order of up to 102 Airbus A321Neo aircraft and additional purchase rights for 50 A320Neos.

The move is part of Cebu Pacific’s strategic initiative to refresh its fleet with more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and reducing carbon footprint.

Adjusting Route Focus in Response to Market Dynamics

Due to shifting market demands and geopolitical tensions, Cebu Pacific has made adjustments to its route network, particularly concerning China. The airline has suspended flights to Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and ceased seasonal services to Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN) and Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX) until further notice.

Instead, Cebu Pacific is redirecting its focus towards secondary cities across Southeast Asia. This pivot includes the resumption of direct flights from Iloilo International Airport (ILO) to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) in October 2024. These adjustments align with the airline’s strategy to explore less saturated markets and meet the evolving preferences of travelers seeking new destinations.
