Introduction of Direct Flights from Guangzhou to Adelaide
Adelaide Airport is set to welcome the resumption of direct flights operated by China Southern Airlines from Guangzhou starting December 12, 2024. This strategic move is aimed at reconnecting South Australia with its second-largest international tourism market. The service was initially launched in December 2016, offering three weekly flights, which were suspended in March 2020 due to the global pandemic.
Economic Impact of the Resumed Flight Service
The resumed service is expected to have a substantial economic impact, with projections of generating over $69 million annually and creating more than 255 full-time equivalent jobs in tourism-related sectors within South Australia. These flights are a crucial part of the broader strategy to boost the local economy by enhancing international connectivity.
Flight Schedule and Fleet Information
The flights will be operated using China Southern’s fleet of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, which are part of the airline’s significant fleet of over 900 aircraft. The scheduled service, under flight number CZ663, will depart from Guangzhou every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 22:15, arriving in Adelaide the following day at 09:55. The return flight, CZ664, will leave Adelaide at 11:30 and arrive in Guangzhou at 18:05.
Benefits Beyond Tourism
Beyond tourism, the direct flights will facilitate greater trade, allowing for the export of local products such as fresh seafood and produce directly to one of China’s largest cities. This route not only supports tourism but also strengthens trade links, providing South Australian businesses critical access to Asian markets and beyond.
Government and Corporate Perspectives on the Resumption
South Australian Premier, Peter Malinauskas, emphasized the importance of this development for both tourism and trade, noting that it would inject millions into the state annually. Brenton Cox, Managing Director of Adelaide Airport, highlighted the role of these flights in connecting communities and stimulating travel and trade. Additionally, Zhixing Sun, Regional General Manager of China Southern Airlines Australia and New Zealand, reiterated the airline’s commitment to expanding the ‘Canton Route’ to enhance global connectivity and bring more visitors to South Australia.
Strategic Importance of the Route
This route is not merely a connection between two cities but a strategic link in the broader network that connects South Australia not just to Asia but also to the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America. This reinstated service marks a significant step in the recovery of international travel and the strengthening of global partnerships.
