Croatia Airlines Embarks on a Comprehensive Fleet Modernization with Airbus A220
Air Lease Corporation (ALC) has recently facilitated the delivery of the first of six Airbus A220-300 aircraft to Croatia Airlines. This event marks a significant milestone in the carrier’s extensive fleet renewal initiative, coinciding with its 35th anniversary. As the national airline and a proud member of the Star Alliance, Croatia Airlines has launched the most ambitious project in its history — the complete renewal of its aircraft fleet.
The introduction of the Airbus A220 not only signifies a leap in technological advancement but also introduces a revamped corporate image for Croatia Airlines. This new branding retains the traditional red, sky blue, and navy colors but enhances visibility with larger fuselage titles and a modern, stylized tail design that reflects contemporary aesthetics and the airline’s forward-looking ethos.
The comprehensive deal involves the addition of 15 new A220 aircraft, set to be delivered in stages: one by the end of 2024, six in 2025, four in 2026, and the remaining three in 2027. These acquisitions are made possible through lease agreements with not only Air Lease Corporation but also Griffin Global Asset Management and Azorra, reflecting a well-orchestrated collaboration between multiple leading aviation entities.
Steven F. Udvar-Házy, Executive Chairman of Air Lease Corporation, expressed honor at ALC’s role in this transformative venture, noting that the delivery of these state-of-the-art aircraft marks the beginning of a new era in Croatia Airlines’ operational capabilities. Similarly, David Beker, Executive Vice President of ALC, highlighted the expected enhancements in passenger comfort and the environmental benefits that these modern aircraft will bring. The A220 is celebrated for its fuel efficiency, reduced noise levels, and lower emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals.
Croatia Airlines views this fleet renewal as pivotal not only to its growth but also as a testament to its role as a crucial component of Croatia’s transport and tourism infrastructure. Jasmin Bajić, President and CEO of Croatia Airlines, emphasized the historic significance of this initiative. He extended gratitude towards partners including Airbus and Pratt & Whitney, acknowledging their critical support in achieving a fleet that meets modern demands while being a source of national pride.
The transition to the Airbus A220, capable of accommodating between 127 and 149 passengers depending on the configuration, is expected to streamline operations and foster a more economically sustainable business model. This strategic update is set to enhance the airline’s responsiveness to passenger needs and operational efficiency, ensuring Croatia Airlines remains competitive in the evolving aviation market.
