Introduction to easyJet’s Expansion Plans
easyJet, the UK-based budget airline, has unveiled significant expansion plans set to take effect in the northern summer of 2025. These plans include the introduction of six new flight routes from four UK airports and an increase in their UK-based fleet. This strategic expansion is anticipated to create approximately 400 new jobs, highlighting easyJet’s commitment to growing its operations and enhancing connectivity within Europe and North Africa.
Detailed Overview of New Routes and Fleet Expansion
Starting in the summer of 2025, easyJet will operate new flight routes connecting Manchester Airport (MAN) and Edinburgh Airport (EDI) to Milan-Linate Airport (LIN). These routes are facilitated by the opening of a new base at Milan-Linate, which came as a result of the European Commission’s approval for easyJet to acquire slots at Milan-Linate and Rome-Fiumicino airports. This approval was part of a larger transaction between ITA Airways and Lufthansa.
In addition, easyJet will introduce flights from Birmingham Airport (BHX) to both Gibraltar (GIB) and Bordeaux (BOD), starting in early May and June respectively. The airline has also planned to enhance its service offerings from Bristol Airport (BRS) with new routes to Palermo Airport (PMO) in Italy and Almeria Airport (LEI) in Spain, commencing in late June 2025.
The expansion does not stop with new routes. easyJet has announced the addition of an Airbus A320 family aircraft to its fleet at Bristol Airport. This is part of a broader initiative that includes fleet increases at Manchester, Edinburgh, and Birmingham airports. The airline’s growth strategy is complemented by the opening of a new base at London-Southend Airport (SEN) at the end of March 2025.
Impact on UK Employment and Local Economies
The addition of new routes and aircraft is expected to create around 400 new jobs across various functions within the airline, significantly boosting local employment. The expansion will likely have a positive economic impact on the regions surrounding the airports due to increased travel and tourism activities.
Enhanced Flight Schedules and Frequencies
Flights to Milan-Linate from Manchester and Edinburgh are scheduled to commence on March 30, 2025, with services operating up to seven days a week all year round. These flights are designed to complement existing easyJet services to Milan-Malpensa, providing more options for travelers. Furthermore, the frequency of flights from London-Gatwick Airport (LGW) to Milan-Linate will be doubled, offering two daily departures to accommodate the increased demand.
From Birmingham, the new routes to Bordeaux and Gibraltar will feature twice-weekly flights during the summer and year-round services to Gibraltar, respectively. The new offerings from Bristol to Almeria and Palermo are also scheduled to run twice a week throughout the year, focusing on both seasonal and regular travelers.
Future Prospects and Strategic Goals
Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK Country Manager, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, emphasizing that the new bases in Italy would not only enhance service offerings but also provide greater value and convenience for UK travelers. He reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to growth and customer satisfaction, looking forward to welcoming passengers aboard the new routes. With these expansions, easyJet continues to strengthen its position as a leading airline in Europe, aiming to offer an even wider array of destinations and improved connectivity for its passengers.
