Introduction to Fleet Expansion
European Cargo, a specialist British air cargo airline, is set to enhance its operational capabilities with the addition of three Airbus A340-600 aircraft converted for freighter use. These additions, expected later in 2024, will expand the carrier’s capacity for cargo-only operations between Bournemouth International Airport and various destinations in China. The first of these freighters is scheduled for delivery in July 2024, with the remaining two expected by October 2024.
Details on Aircraft Conversion and Capabilities
The Airbus A340-600s, previously operated as passenger jets, are being meticulously converted to carry freight on their main decks. This adaptation involves installing a bespoke in-cabin pod containment system, complementing the existing belly capacity. Notably, these aircraft will not feature a traditional main deck cargo door; instead, they are equipped with a unique roller-floor system designed to streamline the loading and unloading process through the former passenger doors. Each aircraft boasts a payload capacity of 76 tonnes and can accommodate up to 440 cubic meters of cargo, making them ideal for the high-volume demands of e-commerce and other freight needs.
Strategic Collaborations and Operational Enhancements
European Cargo’s operations are supported by a close partnership with Cargo First, the dedicated freight-handling arm of Bournemouth Airport’s owners, Regional and City Airports (RCA). This collaboration has been pivotal in the rapid growth of European Cargo’s operations, necessitating the fleet expansion. RCA’s involvement extends beyond Bournemouth, with ownership and operational responsibilities at several other UK airports, enhancing the logistical capabilities of European Cargo. Furthermore, the addition of 15 new staff members by Cargo First in 2023 has bolstered capabilities in warehousing, aircraft handling, and security, pivotal in scaling operations to meet increasing demand.
