Overview of ITA Airways’ Performance in First Half of 2024
ITA Airways, the flag carrier of Italy, has recently disclosed its financial results for the first half of the year 2024, demonstrating significant improvements compared to the previous year. During a well-attended event at the airline’s new offices in Milan on September 27, 2024, key executives including Antonino Turicchi, the Chairman, Andrea Benassi, the General Director, Claudio Faggiani, Chief Financial Officer, and Emiliana Limosani, Chief Commercial Officer, unveiled these promising figures.
For the period ending June 30, 2024, ITA Airways reported revenues amounting to €1.4 billion ($1.54bn), marking an increase of €300 million ($333m) over the same period in 2023. The airline’s EBITDA (Earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation, and amortization) stood at €62 million ($68.2m), reflecting a substantial improvement of €130 million ($144.3m) from the previous year. The cash reserves were reported at €393 million ($436.23), showing a growth of €31 million since June 30, 2023.
From an operational standpoint, ITA Airways has shown commendable performance with an average load factor of 79%, up by 2 percentage points from the first half of 2023. The airline successfully transported over 8.3 million passengers during this period, which is a 26% increase from last year, thereby generating 33% higher revenues. Additionally, the airline maintained a completion rate of 99.84% and a punctuality rate of 78.1%.
Strategic Developments and Brand Revitalization
In a surprising yet strategic move, ITA Airways announced plans to reintroduce the Alitalia brand, which had been replaced by ITA Airways’ name when the new carrier was established in October 2021. The decision to revive the Alitalia brand, albeit in a limited capacity, is seen as an effort to leverage the historical significance and emotional connection associated with the name. This rebranding initiative will incorporate the Alitalia logo alongside ITA Airways in selected customer touchpoints by the end of 2024, enriching ITA Airways’ visual identity with a nod to Italy’s rich aviation history.
The reintroduction of the Alitalia brand will occur in phases, starting with enhancements at strategic customer interaction points. ITA Airways aims to blend the operational strengths and modern identity of the new carrier with the traditional values and recognition of the Alitalia brand. This blend is expected to strengthen ITA Airways’ position both domestically and internationally.
Furthermore, ITA Airways has also announced significant upgrades to its facilities, including a renovation and expansion of its lounge at Milan Linate Airport. The new lounge will be capable of accommodating up to 400 passengers per day, aiming to provide enhanced comfort and service to its users.
While the revival of the Alitalia brand has been met with mixed reactions, the strategic intent behind this move is clear. It aims to consolidate and enhance the airline’s market presence by tapping into the nostalgic value and historic excellence associated with Alitalia, while continuing to build on the robust operational framework established by ITA Airways.
