KLM: Pioneering Aviation Since 1919
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the esteemed flag carrier of the Netherlands, reached a significant milestone on October 7, 2024, celebrating its 105th anniversary. Founded in 1919, KLM is not only a pioneer in the aviation industry but also holds the title of the world’s oldest airline still operating under its original name. The airline’s inaugural flight took off from Amsterdam to London, utilizing a De Havilland DH-9B, a converted bomber, marking the beginning of a rich history in commercial aviation.
Annual Tradition: The Delft Blue House Collection
As part of its anniversary celebrations, KLM introduced a new addition to its beloved Delft Blue House collection, a tradition that has been cherished by passengers since the 1950s. These miniature houses, replicas of notable Dutch buildings, are presented to World Business Class passengers on intercontinental flights. Each house is filled with Bols Jenever, a traditional Dutch gin, making them highly coveted collectibles among frequent flyers.
The 2024 edition features ‘Het huis aan de drie grachten’ or ‘the House on Three Canals’, a historic building in Amsterdam that stands uniquely at the convergence of three major canals. This architectural gem, originally constructed in 1610 during the Dutch Renaissance, underwent significant renovations in 1909 under the direction of architect Jan de Meyer. His objective was to restore the building to its original 17th-century grandeur, which included installing new window frames, stepped gables, and a sandstone door frame, while also revamping the interior with oak draught doors and marble floors.
KLM’s Commitment to Sustainability and Efficiency
During the unveiling ceremony, KLM’s President and CEO, Marjan Rintel, highlighted the airline’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and efficiency, especially pertinent as the airline undergoes a comprehensive cost-cutting and restructuring process. Rintel emphasized that despite the current challenges, KLM’s history is replete with periods of overcoming adversity through creativity and resilience. The new measures aim to lay a robust foundation for a future-proof airline ready to connect the Netherlands with the global community for another century and beyond.
In addition to the anniversary celebrations, KLM also announced a major reorganization program aimed at boosting profitability. This strategic move underscores the carrier’s proactive approach to maintaining its competitive edge and leadership in the global aviation sector.
