Airlink Announces CEO Transition
Johannesburg-based airline, Airlink, has officially announced a significant leadership change set to take place in 2025. The current CEO, Rodger Foster, plans to step down after a distinguished tenure of nearly 33 years, marking the duration of the airline’s history since its inception. He will be succeeded by de Villiers Engelbrecht, the airline’s Chief Financial Officer, effective April 1, 2025.
Rodger Foster’s Legacy
Since co-founding Airlink in 1992 alongside Barrie Webb, Rodger Foster has been at the forefront, steering the airline through the evolving landscapes of the aviation industry. Under his leadership, Airlink was launched amidst the deregulation of South Africa’s domestic airline industry, which for the first time allowed private airlines to compete with the state-owned South African Airways (SAA). This strategic move positioned Airlink to serve underserved markets, initially connecting smaller cities such as Polokwane, Pietermaritzburg, Bloemfontein, Mbombela, and Maseru from its base at what was then Jan Smuts International Airport.
Foster’s vision was instrumental in navigating the airline through numerous challenges, including the recent separation from SAA and the global disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. His leadership not only ensured the airline’s survival but also its growth and expansion into new markets.
Engelbrecht’s Upcoming Leadership
With over two decades of experience within Airlink, de Villiers Engelbrecht is set to take over the reins from Foster. Engelbrecht has been an integral part of Airlink’s executive team since he joined in February 2011 and has played a crucial role in both strategic planning and operational enhancements. His prior role as CFO and his extensive involvement in key areas of the business prepare him well for his new role as CEO.
Engelbrecht’s tenure as CFO saw him dealing with critical aspects of the airline’s operations, helping to stabilize and redirect the airline towards sustainable growth. His leadership qualities are well-recognized within the industry, and he enjoys the support of the executive team, the broader management, and all external stakeholders.
Airlink’s Strategic Growth and Partnerships
Under the outgoing CEO’s guidance, Airlink has not only expanded its fleet to 67 Embraer regional jets but also significantly increased its route network to include 50 destinations across 15 countries. The airline’s strategic partnerships, notably the recent acquisition of a 25 percent equity stake by Qatar Airways, underscore its financial health and growth potential. These alliances have been pivotal in enhancing Airlink’s global connectivity and operational capabilities.
The airline’s resilience is further evidenced by its performance in the 2024 financial year, during which it transported more than four million passengers across over 85,000 flights. Airlink continues to be a key player in the regional aviation market and a valued member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
