Introduction to the Merger
Lufthansa Group has officially announced its comprehensive integration plans for ITA Airways, which was recently acquired by the German airline conglomerate. This strategic merger is set to reshape the operational and customer service landscape of both airlines. The integration plan covers various aspects including frequent flyer programs, terminal operations, flight schedules, and lounge access, marking a significant step towards creating a seamless experience for passengers.
Integration of Frequent Flyer Programs
Starting immediately, Lufthansa’s ‘Miles & More’ and ITA Airways’ ‘Volare’ frequent flyer programs will be fully integrated. This allows the 36 million members of ‘Miles & More’ and the 2.7 million members of ‘Volare’ to earn and redeem miles across all flights operated by Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and ITA Airways. This integration not only enhances the value proposition for loyal customers but also simplifies the loyalty rewards landscape across the carriers.
Unified Terminal Operations
Effective from March 30, 2025, ITA Airways and Lufthansa Group carriers will consolidate their operations within single terminals at major hubs including Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich Airport (MUC). This move is aimed at streamlining passenger transfers, reducing transfer times, and improving overall travel efficiency. This terminal unification will extend to other key hubs, ensuring a consistent and smooth transition for passengers across various touchpoints.
Optimized Flight Schedules
The merger will also see a closer coordination of flight schedules between ITA Airways and Lufthansa Group’s hubs in Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels, as well as ITA Airways’ main hubs in Rome and Milan. This strategic alignment will enable better distribution of flight timings throughout the day, offering passengers more flexibility and convenience in planning their travel.
Enhanced Lounge Access
From March 30, 2025, passengers of ITA Airways will gain access to approximately 130 lounges operated by Lufthansa Group worldwide. Conversely, Lufthansa Group passengers will also enjoy access to ITA Airways lounges. This reciprocal arrangement significantly enhances the travel experience by providing more comfort and exclusive services to frequent flyers.
New Codeshare Agreement
A new codeshare agreement will be launched, increasing booking flexibility and enhancing connectivity for passengers. This agreement will initially cover over 100 flight connections, allowing seamless booking across different airlines within the group. The codeshare will expand to over 250 destinations, integrating domestic flights within Italy to regions such as Sicily, Sardinia, Calabria, and Puglia into the broader network.
Switching Alliances
One of the most transformative aspects of the merger is ITA Airways’ transition from the SkyTeam alliance to the Star Alliance network, a move expected to be complete in the first half of 2026. This transition will involve careful coordination to ensure a smooth changeover for customers and partners by April 30, 2025. The membership in Star Alliance, spearheaded by Lufthansa as a founding member, is anticipated to bring strategic benefits and greater global connectivity to ITA Airways.
