On August 29, 2024, a significant event took place at Beijing’s Capital International Airport (PEK) as the first C919 aircraft, developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), was delivered to Air China, the nation’s flag carrier. This event marked a notable achievement in China’s aviation industry, emphasizing its capacity to compete in the global market for commercial airliners.

The aircraft, registered as B-919X, arrived directly from Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG) where COMAC’s final assembly plant is located. The delivery was celebrated with a traditional water arch salute, a gesture of honor and celebration. Earlier in April 2024, Air China had committed to a significant order of 100 C919 aircraft, with scheduled deliveries spanning from 2024 to 2031, signifying strong confidence in the new aircraft.

The C919 delivered to Air China features a two-class configuration with a total of 158 seats: eight in business class and 150 in economy class. Each seat is equipped with state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment systems designed to enhance passenger experience during flights. The aircraft’s introduction into service is a result of extensive collaboration between Air China and COMAC, focusing on operational integration and staff training. Specialized teams from Air China’s aircraft maintenance, crew training, and ground support divisions were formed to ensure a seamless introduction of the C919 into regular service.

Before entering commercial operation, Air China plans to conduct a series of tests and certifications, including ground tests, route validation flights, emergency evacuation drills, and operational certification to ensure the aircraft meets all required standards and regulations.

Simultaneously, a similar milestone was achieved by China Southern Airlines with the delivery of their first C919 aircraft, registered as B-919J. This aircraft was also delivered on August 29, 2024, and was subsequently flown to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), where China Southern maintains a major hub. Like Air China, China Southern has ordered 100 C919 aircraft, underlining the strong market confidence in COMAC’s new offering.

The dual delivery event at COMAC’s Pudong Assembly and Manufacturing Center not only signifies the official launch of the C919 into the fleets of both major carriers but also highlights COMAC’s enhanced production and management capabilities. To date, the C919 program has successfully delivered nine aircraft, with seven already operational with China Eastern Airlines, the launch customer for this narrowbody jet.

This development marks a pivotal moment in the commercial aviation sector in China, showcasing significant advancements in domestic aircraft manufacturing and reinforcing China’s position in the competitive landscape dominated by established Western manufacturers like Airbus and Boeing.
