Unprecedented Success in August 2024
PLAY Airlines, the Icelandic budget carrier, has marked August 2024 as one of its most triumphant periods since its inception three years ago. The airline reported that it transported a total of 187,960 passengers, a slight increase of 1.8% compared to the nearly 185,000 passengers in August 2023. More notably, the load factor, a key indicator of airline efficiency measuring the percentage of available seating capacity that is filled with passengers, reached an all-time high of 91.6%. This is a significant improvement from the 88.9% recorded in the same month the previous year.
Einar Örn Ólafsson, the CEO of PLAY Airlines, expressed pride in the airline’s achievements. He highlighted that this record load factor demonstrates robust demand and customer satisfaction with their services. Despite the typical post-summer drop in travel, PLAY managed to not only maintain but increase its load factor and passenger count. The airline served 32 destinations from its hub at Reykjavik-Keflavik International Airport, with 22 routes exceeding a 90% load factor. Furthermore, PLAY boasted an on-time performance rate of 91.5%, positioning it as a leader in punctuality among its competitors for 13 consecutive months.
Strategic Developments and Community Impact
The detailed breakdown of passenger origins reveals that 25.9% were departing from Iceland, 35.6% were inbound to Iceland, and 38.5% were transit passengers using Iceland as a stopover on routes connecting Europe and North America. The local Icelandic market showed a remarkable growth of 18.4%, with 48,694 passengers flying from Iceland in August 2024, up from 41,112 in the previous year. Ólafsson underscored the importance of this growth, attributing it to the airline’s strategic choice of destinations that appeal to Icelandic travelers.
The airline’s operational excellence was also highlighted by its CEO, praising the team for maintaining superior punctuality, a critical factor in customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. Ólafsson anticipates that the positive trend in bookings will continue, reflecting ongoing consumer confidence and approval of PLAY’s service offerings.
Expansion and New Route Announcements
Looking forward, PLAY is not resting on its laurels. In August 2024 alone, the airline launched ticket sales for two new routes to Faro, Portugal, and Aalborg, Denmark. These additions are expected to strengthen PLAY’s presence in these countries, complementing existing services to Lisbon, Porto, and Funchal in Portugal, and Copenhagen and Billund in Denmark. The strategic expansion into these markets underscores PLAY’s commitment to broadening its reach and offering more travel options to its customers.
Moreover, the airline has plans to increase the frequency of flights to Vilnius, Lithuania, from one to two weekly flights starting in 2025. Another significant development is the introduction of a new route to Pula, Croatia, with services commencing on May 31, 2025. This new route, along with the increase in flights to Split, Croatia, reflects PLAY’s successful penetration into the Croatian market, which is anticipated to continue growing. By summer 2025, PLAY aims to operate a total of 44 destinations across Europe, North Africa, and North America, using an efficient fleet of ten Airbus A320neo family aircraft.
