A Milestone in Saudi Aviation

Saudi Arabia’s emerging national carrier, Riyadh Air, is set to operate its inaugural non-commercial flight on September 12, 2024. This significant event, involving a flight from Riyadh to Jeddah, marks the beginning of a series of test flights aimed at securing the Air Operators Certificate (AOC) from the Kingdom’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA). Upon successful acquisition of the AOC, Riyadh Air will be authorized to launch commercial passenger and cargo operations. The airline plans to utilize a fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, initially announced in 2023.

Strategic Development and Vision 2030 Alignment

Launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in March 2023, Riyadh Air is a strategic component of Saudi Arabia’s broader ambition outlined in ‘Vision 2030’ to transform the Kingdom into a global aviation hub. This initiative seeks to enhance the national economy by expanding connectivity, increasing annual passenger traffic to 330 million, and servicing over 250 destinations worldwide. Riyadh Air, as a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund and a sister company to Saudia, plays a crucial role in this transformative agenda.

Operational Plans and Fleet Expansion

The first test flight, designated as RX5001, will depart from Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport and arrive at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport, with an expected duration of approximately 90 minutes. Over the subsequent months, Riyadh Air intends to execute additional domestic and international test flights as part of the AOC certification process. While specific route details remain undisclosed, the airline’s choice of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner suggests a focus on both medium and long-haul international routes not currently served by Saudia.

Riyadh Air has placed an order for 39 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with an option for an additional 33, signaling significant growth and expansion plans. The airline’s board has publicly expressed gratitude towards its key partners, including GACA, Saudia, Riyadh Airports Company, and Saudia Technic, for their support in reaching this pivotal stage.

Forging Global Partnerships

In alignment with its strategic objectives, Riyadh Air has actively pursued partnerships with leading global airlines to strengthen its market presence from inception. Notable collaborations include agreements with Singapore Airlines, Air China, Virgin Atlantic, Delta Air Lines, and Turkish Airlines. These partnerships focus on enhancing interline connectivity, codeshare arrangements, and potentially integrating services such as frequent flyer programs and cargo operations. Additionally, Riyadh Air is exploring digital innovations with third-party suppliers to optimize reservation systems, operational efficiency, and sustainable aviation practices, thereby reducing carbon emissions and advancing environmental sustainability.
