Strategic Alliance and Enhanced Connectivity

SAS, the prominent flag carrier of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, officially joined the SkyTeam alliance on September 1, 2024. This significant move was followed by the establishment of a comprehensive codeshare agreement with Delta Air Lines, a leading member of the SkyTeam alliance. The codeshare agreement, set to begin on September 25, 2024, aims to substantially improve connectivity and broaden travel options for passengers traveling between North America and Scandinavia.

Under this agreement, SAS customers will benefit from enhanced access to over 150 destinations across North America through Delta’s major hubs, including Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, and Seattle. Conversely, Delta’s North American customers will enjoy seamless connections to 50 destinations in Northern Europe, extending beyond SAS’s strategic hubs in Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm.

Benefits of the Codeshare Agreement

The partnership between SAS and Delta not only facilitates increased route access but also allows passengers to earn and redeem frequent flyer miles on both Delta-SkyMiles and SAS-EuroBonus programs, when flying on routes operated by either airline. This reciprocal benefit enhances the value proposition for loyal customers of both airlines, encouraging further engagement and brand loyalty.

Paul Verhagen, Chief Commercial Officer of SAS, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “With our new direct route from Copenhagen to Seattle, we’re not only enhancing our network but also strengthening our connections to the Pacific Northwest, providing more travel options for our passengers.” He emphasized the strategic importance of the alliance, noting that it aligns with SAS’s goals to provide seamless connectivity and comprehensive benefits across their global network.

Perry Cantarutti, Delta’s Senior Vice President of Alliances, also remarked on the partnership, “Our collaboration with SAS will significantly strengthen our presence in Northern Europe and improve our overall flying experience by offering customers enhanced access to destinations throughout Scandinavia.”

Future Prospects and Strategic Implications

While the immediate benefits of the agreement favor SAS’s passengers due to direct flights to all of Delta’s main US hubs, the long-term strategic implications suggest substantial mutual advantages. Delta’s expansive network in the US could potentially feed into SAS’s routes to Scandinavia, enhancing overall network utility and passenger flow.

Furthermore, with the backing of Air France-KLM Group, SAS is well-positioned to extend its influence within the SkyTeam alliance. The potential inclusion of SAS in the SkyTeam transatlantic joint venture, comprising Delta, Air France, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic, would solidify its standing within the alliance and enhance competitive parity with other major airline groups like Oneworld and Star Alliance across the Atlantic.

As alliances continue to play a crucial role in the global aviation landscape, the strategic expansion of SAS through its membership in SkyTeam and the deepening of ties with Delta Air Lines underscores a robust commitment to enhancing global connectivity and passenger experience.
