Singapore Airlines has confirmed its plans to commence operations at the new Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) scheduled to open in 2026. This move makes Singapore Airlines the first international carrier to commit to the $5.3 billion project, which is currently under construction near the Greater Sydney area in New South Wales, Australia.

As the construction of the WSI approaches its final stages with the recent completion of the terminal’s roof structure, internal fit-outs have begun, accelerating preparations for its inauguration. The airport is designed to handle both domestic and international flights, including freight services, and aims to alleviate the congestion at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.

The initial capacity of WSI will allow it to handle up to 10 million passengers annually with a single runway. Plans for expansion are in place, with a second runway to be added as demand increases. By 2031, the airport is projected to serve approximately 10 million passengers annually, growing to 82 million by 2063.

The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, emphasized the strategic importance of Singapore Airlines’ commitment, highlighting the direct access it will provide to numerous global destinations via the Changi Airport hub. This development is expected to significantly boost connectivity and economic growth for Western Sydney.

Additionally, the airport authorities are in discussions with other international carriers such as Turkish Airlines and Vietnam Airlines, which have shown interest in operating from WSI. This indicates a growing international interest in the new airport, set to become a major hub in the region.

Domestically, Qantas and its budget subsidiary Jetstar have also committed to operating from WSI. Qantas plans to base five aircraft at the new airport, while Jetstar will add ten more, marking WSI as a pivotal location for their operations in Australia.
