Resumption of Flights to Damascus and Benghazi
Turkish Airlines, known for its extensive global network, is set to expand its reach further by resuming flights to Damascus, Syria, and Benghazi, Libya. These routes were previously suspended due to the unstable political and military conditions in both countries. The reestablishment of these routes marks a significant step in reconnecting Turkey with key regional cities post-conflict.
Strategic Implications and Schedule Details
The resumption of these flights not only enhances Turkish Airlines’ portfolio but also signifies a broader attempt at regional stability and connectivity. Flights to Damascus will commence on January 23, 2025, operating thrice-weekly. This decision follows the stabilization of the region after the fall of the Bashar Al-Assad regime in late December 2024.
Similarly, flights to Benghazi will begin shortly thereafter, focusing on reconnecting eastern Libya, which has seen fragmented control primarily under the leadership of Khalifa Haftar since the civil war post-2011. These flights will also operate on a thrice-weekly basis using B737-800 aircraft, demonstrating Turkish Airlines’ commitment to providing reliable and strategic air service to and from regions experiencing post-conflict recovery.
Impact on Regional Travel and Restrictions
The reintroduction of the Istanbul to Damascus route is particularly noteworthy. Following the visit of Syria’s new foreign minister to Ankara, this route aims to foster diplomatic and economic exchanges between the two nations. However, it’s important to note that Syrian authorities have imposed certain restrictions, including a total entry ban on Israeli and Iranian nationals, with potential limitations on Lebanese citizens and members of the press.
In contrast, the Benghazi route reflects an ongoing dialogue and shifting allegiances, as Turkey has historically supported the internationally recognized government in Tripoli but has also engaged in diplomatic efforts with eastern Libyan factions throughout 2024.
Comparison with Regional Competitors
With the addition of these routes, Turkish Airlines will further cement its status as the carrier with the most international destinations, flying to 352 destinations in 131 countries as of January 2025. This expansion puts Turkish Airlines ahead of regional competitors, including Royal Jordanian and Qatar Airways, both of which have also resumed operations in war-affected areas, aiming to rebuild air travel infrastructure and connectivity.
Royal Jordanian has announced the reinstatement of its flights from Amman to Damascus starting January 31, 2025, planning to increase its frequency to daily by April. Qatar Airways has also reinstated its route to Damascus, which had been suspended for 13 years, demonstrating a regional consensus on the importance of restoring air links to Syria’s capital.
